Ovulation and Your Fertility

You have tried to conceive for several months, however your period is not regular and you are missing a few periods...

This is a sign that you may be not ovulating every month. As you know ovulation is a very important step in the process of conception.
What would be the reasons for not ovulating every month?
Well, before answer this question let us see what ovulation is.

Ovulation

Ovulation is the production of an egg each month, which increases your chances of having a baby.
The mechanism of ovulation involves a centre in the brain called hypothalamus, which releases a hormone (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone),  stimulating the pituitary gland to produce Luteinizing hormone and Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) triggering ovulation.

Ovulation may not occur if there is a disruption or a defect in this mechanism.

Ovulation issues can be categorized as:
  • Anovulation (lack of ovulation),
  • Oligoovulation (infrequent ovulation),
  • Lutheal phase defects.
What  are the factors that usually cause a defect or disruption on the ovulation process?
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Stress
  • Excess production of  the hormone prolactin
  • Poor dietary intake
  • Overweight or underweight
  • High FSH
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Low progesterone
